The Sociological Imagination Assignment
The goal of this assignment is to help you demonstrate your sociological imagination, which is your ability to situate your life in the social context and to understand the impact of the social forces on you. In completing this assignment, make sure you are being sociological. To facilitate this, think about various concepts and theories you have learned in this class and integrate two of them into your assignment. For example: gender, class, race, ethnicity, subculture, socialization, functionalism, symbolic interactionism, conflict theory, etc.
It is important that you don’t just list the two sociological concepts randomly but demonstrate your understanding of them by using them appropriately. Define each concept first, and then apply it, using it to describe, illustrate and explain what happened.
In addition, please remember to cite and reference the source of your definitions properly, using the American Sociological Association (ASA) style.
For this assignment, think about who you are today and how your identity, your aspirations, attitudes and beliefs were shaped by your social environment.
Some additional questions for you to consider are:
What social forces have made it difficult for you to achieve your dreams?
What social forces have created opportunities for you?
How have you responded to various social constraints and opportunities?
