IBIO 31 CSU East Bay Antibiotics Worksheet
Activity- Antibiotics
STEP 1: Antibiotic resistant microbes are a global threat. In addition to the material in your textbook, please read through the following articles: Part 1: Antibiotic Resistance and Part 2: Antibiotic Resistance
STEP 2: Write up a 3 paragraph response to ONE of the following scenarios that you may encounter as a health care professional. Scenario A: You treat a Tuberculosis patient who is prescribed a 6 month course of antibiotics. Explain to him:
• Why such a long course of antibiotics is needed to treat TB based on the biology of the causative bacterium.
• Potential side effects he might experience from such a long course of antibiotics.
• Potential consequences of not completing the full course for him and society including MDR-TB and XDR-TB. Scenario B: Your friend has reoccurring UTIs due to catheter use and is often prescribed an antibiotic as treatment by her doctor. Explain to her:
• What bacteria typically cause UTIs and why catheter use can increase risk.
• Why she must take the full course of antibiotics each time vs. taking them until she “feels better.”
• Why she should not dispose of any unused antibiotic pills or liquid down the drain or flushed down the toilet. Scenario C: Your Uncle raises beef cattle and is considering adding low amounts of antibiotics to their feed because he heard it makes them grow larger. Explain to him:
• The concept of using antibiotics for “essential use only.”
• The process of natural selection. How low levels of antibiotics select for resistant bacteria.
• How these antibiotic resistant bacteria can then be harmful to not only cows, but also humans.
STEP 3: Research. You will need additional sources to help you fully understand your topic. Find at least 2 additional sources to help you understand your topic. The LCC librarians can help you do research and find sources. Find their info here: http://www.lcc.edu/library/ You can also use online search engines such as PubMed https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed and/or Google Scholar http://scholar.google.com/
STEP 4: Write your activity. You will need to cite each of your sources at least once in your paper. Use the format of the Author’s name in parenthesis at the end of the quoted or paraphrased section. I.e. (Author) I strongly prefer that you paraphrase information rather than use direct quotes. Even if it is paraphrased into your own words, it is still someone else’s idea and needs to be cited. If you must use a direct quote, please limit it to no more than one sentence per paragraph.
This paper (as well as any written material submitted for this class including papers and homework assignments) is expected to be your own work. Presenting another person’s work as your own is considered plagiarism. A paper that contains plagiarism will be scored as a “0” and submitted to the office of student compliance. I prefer that you write in your own words to show that you understand the concept well enough to explain it. If you feel that your paper contains sections that (even when presented in your own words) are too similar to your source material, please include a citation.
STEP 5: Include a bibliography or works cited at the end. You may use any citation style. Here are some examples in APA format:
How to format sources in a bibliography (APA style)
If you have a Book:
Author last name, first initial. (Year published). Book title. Publication city: publishing company.
If you have a Scientific Journal Article:

STEP 6: Upload your paper to the discussion board. You will not be able to read other posts until you post your own submission.
STEP 7: Comment on a classmate’s paper.
STEP 8: Respond to any comments on your post .If you do not have any comments at this time, please leave a comment on your own presentation that says, “No comments.” How will this activity be assessed?
Is your activity between 3 paragraphs of the appropriate length?
Does your activity demonstrate understanding of the topic of antibiotic resistance?
Did you include a bibliography with three sources? (One may be the website listed above.)
Did you use in-text citations for all 3 sources?
Are Latin names treated correctly?
Are there less than 2 spelling/grammar/sentence structure mistakes?
Did you comment on at least one other posting?
Did you respond to at least one comment on your own posting?
o If you do not receive any comments by the due date from your classmates, please leave a comment under your own presentation “No comments.” This will let me know that you checked, but that there was not a comment to respond to.
