 Learning about the Unknowns

Now that you’ve characterized and identified some of our unknown bacteria, now it is time to learn a little more about the bacteria. Pick two of the bacteria from the list below: one from the pathogenic cocci list and one from the enteric list. Do a little bit of internet research to find out the answers to the questions below. You can use your textbook, or find it on the CDC.gov website (http://www.cdc.gov) by searching for it by name.

Pathogenic Cocci                      Enteric Bacteria

Staphylococcus aureus            Escherichia coli

Streptococcus pneumoniae    Salmonella typhi

Neisseria gonorrheae              Shigella dysenteriae

Streptococcus pyogenes

Name of Bacteria #1:

 1. Is this bacteria typically found in the microbiome of a healthy human? Where? If so, how does it become pathogenic to cause disease?

 2. What is the portal of entry?

3. What is the mode of transmission? What are the common reservoirs?

4. What kind of disease(s) does this bacteria cause? What are the common symptoms?

 5. How is someone who is sick due to this pathogen typically treated by a healthcare professional?

6. Are there any issues with antibiotic resistance in treating infections with this bacteria?

7. Is there a vaccine available? Is it part of the normal childhood vaccination schedule in the United States?

 8. Means of epidemiological control (how do humans typically control the spread of this pathogen?)

9. Describe at least one other amazing and cool thing about this pathogen.
