Bio 256 UV Damage Lab

 Post Lab Assignment

1. Which sunscreens were tested? Of those tested, which provided the best protection? How was that determined?

2. Are there any caveats in terms of experimental setup? Are there components or factors that could not be controlled for?

3. At which time point was the DNA significantly altered by the UV? Include a photo of the gel, noting which sample is key in this answer.

4. Did all the sunscreen samples prevent damage to the DNA? Why or why not?

 5. Write an Introduction section based on these experiments. This is the introduction to a scientific paper, so it is more detailed than the abstract and does not include the results (the one line summary of results would be included in the abstract.) This section is easily a page long to cover all the appropriate information.

• Start with the broad outline of what the experiment was and why it matters. Include background information on UV damage and sunscreens in general. You will need references for this, cited in APA format. (10pts)

 • One the concepts have been introduced, define the problem you are asking and briefly explain what you are testing and why. This is still NOT the methods section! (4pts)

• Include your hypothesis and prediction from the beginning of lab, but do NOT include any conclusions. (2pts)
