CLASS: S&S Chapter 3 and Persepolis: The Soup → Skiing

Our journey with Marji and her family spans generations, intellectual ideals, continents, cultures, and social identities. In this assignment, students will compare how marginalized groups are treated in the US in ways that are similar to the treatment of marginalized Iranians. Assignment

Part I: What do we know? Review your What do We Know/Situate Yourself assignment and consider (make note of) the preconceived notions you had at the beginning of the semester, about yourself or your group, other social groups, the material, and the class.

Part II: Other Perspectives

a. Compare how Native Americans, African Americans, Latinos, the disabled, the poor, LGBTQIA2, and counterculture groups are treated in the United States. Point out any similarities or differences between these groups’ treatment in the US versus ways Iranians were treated in The Complete Persepolis. Feel free to examine government or group-based publications from the marginalized groups listed. Be sure to look for reputable resources ( ex: census data or historical news articles from legitimate sources vs your friends blog or specifically slanted news)

b. Considering S&S Chapter 3, Discuss how these marginalized groups may “learn” the social world in ways that majority groups do not “learn” the social world. What role does “impression management” play in the lives of the marginalized groups you selected in part a. Thinking about the nature of self, how are (or how do you think) marginalized groups identity, self-image and self-esteem impacted by the structures (laws, state agencies, governments, social policies) of marginalization? Hypothesize how ‘limitations” play a role in the lives of the marginalized groups according to S&S Ch 3.

Bibliography: Reference your works cited on a separate bibliography page using MLA style.

General Writing: In text citations should appear at the end of the sentence you have written with the author and page number in parenthesis (Dortch, 4). Please make sure to use “quotation marks” when you are quoting. Review the plagiarism statement on the syllabus and on the UM website. UM provides a writing center for you. This center helps to make sure your ideas are coherent and well written. Take your finished product to the writing center and get help if necessary before you turn it in.
